Oh, internet – validate me!

In a world where I’ve written everything and completed nothing…
In a world where I’ve done everything and made a career of none of it…
In a world where I desire to be a polyhistor, yet always come home as a dilettante…
Oh, internet – validate me!

Surround me with morons of every shade…
People whose voices are easily overlooked when judged by their grammar…
Blowhards with less observable substance than I see in myself…
Oh, internet – validate me!

Send me your young that I may dismiss them for their lack of experience…
Send me your middle-aged drone that I may mock their lack of mastery…
Send me the one affable octogenarian out of 100 so that I may have someone to listen to…
Oh, internet – validate me!

Let me mingle with people of every nation that I may be cosmopolitan without airfare…
Let me dominate a public forum discussion without ever having to appear in public…
Let me flirt with all sorts of random people without ever getting dressed…
Oh, internet – validate me!

———

The following quote (I believe that it comes from Jefferson or Franklin – though I can no longer find the record; maybe it was just an admonishment in a dream.) has haunted my unproductive hours for nearly a year now…

“Do not tell me what you are going to do.  Show me what you have done!”

That’s where the title of this blog comes from.  At the end of the day, what do I (or you, if you want to view it that way) have to point to in order to show people my worth in society or life?  What monument, what building, what artwork, what book, what craft do I bring to the table that separates me from the rest of the glut of people whose only claim to fame seems to be allowing themselves (or their families) to live another day?

Sure, you can put food on the table, but wouldn’t it be impressive if you’d made the table?

This is what I want in life.  A lasting legacy – a promontory from which can be lauded the fact that I existed not merely to survive, but to create.  This year will be the birth of me or the death of me.  Of that I’m certain.
